you open your eyes for your first glimpse of this world
and my heart expands in my chest
pushing it's outer limits as i stare at you
ten fingers, ten toes
two exquisite blue eyes, one pink quivering mouth
perfection wrapped up in the smallest parcel
the gift i never knew i couldn't live without
and as you take in your surroundings
my eyes never leave you,
all wrinkled and red
dark hair plastered to your scalp
long limbed but so tiny
i take all of you in
and as the tears spill from my eyes
i discover the truest form of beauty on this earth
how could i prepare for this moment
this aching, heart wrenching love
i am bound to you, entranced by you
i feel inadequate in your presence
you are so pure and serene
untouched, uncorrupted by this world
innocence bundled in white cotton, safe in my arms
you are every sonnet ever written
every portrait on display
the lilting music of heaven's harps
and the epitome of grace
i look for the words that describe you
but they all pale in comparison
for you are an original masterpiece
an angel without wings, stolen from heaven
blessing us with your presence
i am a mother
i am your mother
the words echo around in my mind
and a warmth radiates from inside my very soul
i repeat the words, savouring them
test them out against the silence in the room
a mother, me?
nine months of waiting and it still defies belief
i sit up all night lost in the excitement
i caress your skin, drown you in kisses
whisper sweet words in the darkness to you
clasp you to my breast and nourish you
and as i fill your head with promises to love & protect you
you clasp my finger with your tiny fist
and claim my heart forever
