I was looking
at a tree
and it reminded
me of me

Its roots
are long and strong
like my heritage
it goes on and on

the lowest limb
its first sprout
when I was a child
I ventured out

and all the limbs
their zig-zag routes
my careers. trips and avenues
that all thinned out

and all the leaves
around this tree
days I've lived
the sorrow and the glee

as long as I've lived
I'd be a tall pine
sympathy for those
who never reached so high

I was looking
at a tree
and it reminded
me of me
