After the Fact

Did you forgive me when I choked your "no"
With the fingers of relentless kisses
Compressed rejection to compliance
With the strength of vice tight limbs

Did you burn? The sudden immolation
Anger sticking napalm sweet and sickly
Shame melting bones to laval flows
Love that said no more, no more to love

Or did you die? In the narrow one dimension
That was me. Or in the bounded cube
Of us. Or in the space and time and cost
Of life itself. And did I kill you?

I ask, after the fact. Conscience emerging
From the mire of my desire,
Guilt slow poured like honey
On the leavened bread of years
