I am a woman of mixed heritage
Black, Hispanic and native Indian
Full lips, wide nose and brown skin

I speak in Chinese proverbs of wisdom
Heated words of Spanish slang
And the body language of the Ashanti

My hair is curly and bone straight
Short on hot days and long on cold

I walk on sturdy thick legs
With the roll of my wide hips and strong shoulders
Each step has pride and purpose

Comfortable in my skin – I dance with the rhythm

Many do not understand me
It matters not, I understand me
