Outside, the sun is shining
and people are passing, briskly,
and church bells are clanging
and car horns and ambulance sirens are sounding

and the cacophonous image of Toronto
is ascending into the sky's
ebullient blueness.

Inside, the house is quiet, dull
assailed by the monotony of your absence.

Tendrils of mist drift
across my vision, my ear
twitches at a distant pounding,
a jackhammer five streets away,
a cup levitates in my hand,
splashing coffee on my jeans

- I've lost my sense of balance,
my sense of touch,
my sense of humour,
my sense of proportion,
my sense of who I am
or where I was when this whirlwind
picked me up and threw me into your arms.
