how i love to hear you speak of things! to gently put me in my place!
and to be sure, you're probably right.
but i like to think i may too teach you.

as you talk at me I am hidden-glad i can make you hurt. it breaks us even.

it is the right of wronged lovers to hate
the right of those who don't, not to love you.
that was difficult to learn. I still forget.

my loving expert, when I'm cruel, when you clutch your stomach with longing, think
of the times when it was
you who closed the light.
you who slowly put the phone down
in passive farewell.

this my love is the way of the world,
vinegar-sweet. that is a lesson i have learned -
all by myself, oh sweet lecturer of mine.
