     - So where will you go, now your work is done?
What will you do for joy and to keep warm?
Whom will you sing to, songs of strife and storm,
whom will you sing your dreams, and all the lays
that used to fill your lonely wandering days,
songs best heard safely home, the curtains drawn,
before the fire with your lover sworn,
the darkness past, the elements outrun?

     - Where will I go, now that my work is done?
Down moors and marshes I pursued a form,
fair vision, to be lured into the storm
where I grew old and lost my former ways
     of pleasing listeners; nobody stays
to hear worn dreams. It's mine alone to mourn
the passing of my days, my hopes forlorn –
my heart is cold, and winter has begun.

A scop's work...

...is never done, though, is it? The songs must be sung, the stories told, even if he is the only audience he has left at the end. Poignant!
