Bruce Nettesheim

My mind jumps off its endless track
of mindless day to day
Opens long closed memories
of the dimly remembered past

Out of the swirling fog
steps the smiling, fair haired Bruce.
scattering vivid Kodachrome photos
of our schoolyard days as chums:
Of long long walks
and longer talks
and forbidden cigarettes
Of midnight raids on the Kitchen
and happier freer days.

I dial and dial long distance
without much chance of hope
'til I reach an Aunt in Wisconsin
Who says with a catch in her voice,
"Oh didn't you hear
Didn't you know about Viet Nam."

There at my desk
in the middle of the day
a tear winds its way down my face
For long long walks
and longer talks
And happier, freer days.
