The quarry's still, oven-hot and close,
Incandescent on three sides and floor,
Reflects light inward, compounding it.
The fourth wall, jade-green and cool,
Overlooks the valley and the highway
Winding westward that leads to the sea.

There are the mountains, upswept, massive,
As I, sitting on the quarry's ledge,
Follow the river that coaxed its way
Through the pass before discovery,
Twists of iridescence in the sun.
Silence is not the absence of sound.

Very picturesque piece from five years back in Lit's archives;

Can almost feel the oppresive heat of the quarry.
