drowned, beneath a cheery tree
torn tendons of yellow ribbon
lie tangled here and there

some animal
with its determined claws
sliced through the paper skin
disemboweling this gift

mother gathers the remains
for burial in the fireplace, mutters
mistah kurtz—he dead

I have to admit..........

.....this was one of the poems that made voting in the December challange so hard. On any given day it would get my #s but the company was so rich. I seriously admire this poem, it could so possibly have been the winner. A definite 5+.

...the honor ... the honor ... of reading this exquisite and terrifying piece still lingers. Wonderful imagery. I believe there is entirely NOT enough allusion to art and literature in modern poetry, let alone well crafted allusion. Excellent work, as i'm sure you Intended.

Delightfully Suspenseful

I loved it in the contest thread and I still do. Powerful quirkiness, great images, and not a wasted word. It's a keeper. :)

Merry Christmas — don't even stand in the way of those fierce youngsters and their intended targets.
