He blanched tasting almond
in his coffee, tainting it
with a daffodil sweetness
so sickening even a trace
of bourbon couldn’t fix,
quite the opposite – made it worse.

Remembering how he’d run
his fingers over each letter
of Wednesday’s newspaper
ignoring the printed rumor
he glanced at the basement door
whispering, “Farewell my love.”
