I.      Inquiry

My mother smiled
Before she died.
I have been told
Others have
In pain's absence
At the deepest hour
When whispers
Drop like a pin.

The nature of stillness
Requires sound
To know of stillness,
But only a smile
Hospice ladies know
Marries the mind
With heaven somehow.

II.      For My Father

So now it's come to this:
Some stroking tubal accordion
Sucks and pumps,
Sucks and pumps,
Leaving you sterile
Beyond words.

But your eyes,
They comfort me
Like the blue and white
From your Blessed Mary
As we both measure
Time's last granule
Of diamonded sand.

III.     Thomas Said

"We should think about death
Every day," Thomas said,
"Not as news at eleven
Or alone in one's bed.

We should think about death
As monks do at dawn,
Soft eyes on a Saturday night
After love,
And sleep-easy peace
In the crib."
