Filthy and starved
     distended and shrunken
The child cries hungrily for food
     while drunken
Tourists consume and consume and consume
And then throw away the remainder
     half eaten.

The child starves and sickens
     while its mother dies inside
Across town the ballroom where dance music quickens
and the rich waltz, tango, and bop
In the tenement the crying stops
A woman screams
Someone called the cops.

Dead baby, there on the bed
"parental neglect," "she's out of her head"
Screaming, hysterical, she resists the cops
Her insane resistance
     the nightstick stops
Blood on the floor where her head hit
"Crazy woman"
     "place smelled like shit"

Fund-raising dinner
     a thousand dollars a plate
Stop social unrest before its too late
Welcome our Hero
     gallant and true
Praise his policies for feeding the few.

"There is no starvation," the candidate cried
While on the reservation
Another one died.  And another and another
     when will it all end
how long can they lie, how far can they bend
The truth of the matter
     which is that
The world dies in hunger
While we grow fat.
