Deadly

"Boredom is a killer,"
I overhear one of them say.
I look at the glazed eyes,
    the lids falling over them
like heavy curtains shutting out the light.
(It made me sleepy just looking at them.)
I want to scream,
   "Wake up!
This is your life you're sleepwalking through!"
I want to lob truth and knowledge like grenades
to blow up their apathy and ennui.
I want to tear through the fog of
     incomprehension that surrounds them,
       stab their complacency,
       rip those damn smirks
         right off their faces.
But instead,
I ask, "Are there any questions?"
and turn to write their assignment for next class on the board.
