lie wounded in tenements
they themselves condemn
wallowing in rat invested hallways
of dark despair
all humming the same lost song
of unrequited love
deception's serenade
for hope dies in a single note
in a single word
a single moment
leaving one panting and prostrate
before the altar of romantic love
