An endless two-lane blacktop stretches on into the night
Dissolving into eternity, not a speck of light –
Except two headlights, cutting a swath through a tableau;
Revelation only hinting at a world completely unknown.

The shifting of gears, the merging of lanes
Landscapes are changing, yet somehow remain the same.
The moon is gone, fraternizing with some star
This night is everlasting, the horizon never far.

With none around to judge you, speed's a relative thing
Watch it as it rises, erasing everything.
Beyond the city limits I can finally feel free
From all my obligations: work, friends, and family.

Alive trance-rhythms cycle loud in my ear
Their endless repetition screaming: Disappear here.
I find it hard to resist, that alluring siren's call
Much like Adam or Eve did – that time before the fall.

Their temptation understandable; the allure of forbidden fruit
Confronting me momentarily, an eternal escape route.
But no, it's not my time yet,
So I turn the wheel back, to all I strove to forget.

The night is not so long now, dawn is almost here
With it comes the sunrise, eradicating all my fears.
Re-entering the city's crowded embrace
I cannot help a smile, creeping across my face.

It all now seems quite petty, my nightly sojourns
But I know I'd be dead without them; dead and rightly mourned.
They teach me appreciation, for all that I've obtained,
They help me understand things, and from them I gained:
A sense of realization, not of pleasure, love or, pain

But of an essential truth of mine:
No matter how far or fast I drive,
I'll never be more alive
Than I am now.

Really good poem but a little too wordy. The first part held my attention much more than the final stanzas. But it is an interesting read.
