Divorce

A sudden quiet sundering
--This from that—
A heavy cold mass floats free
In a new direction
How is this day any different?
Aren’t the bird songs just the same?
She needs space and he needs time
Since they rarely touch or talk and never dance
Why share a room or food or high finance?
But a child now stares dumbfounded
At half an empty double bed
A hole in the heart where a hug used to be
A drone of planes fills the days
Joined by juvenile voices pitched in high dispute

Fluttering To Do lists
Pills and Appointments
The name your mother never mentions on the phone
The Thing that Was
Taps on empty porcelain
Water from an unfixed faucet
Was – Not – Was – Not – Was – Not - Was Was - Not
Click off all the old songs
Keep away from certain places
Places still littered with old promises
Dates still penciled on an old calendar
Documents still itching for another signature
Smiles still caught in fading snapshots
An empty hand still holding
Still
