I should have been another time
When I could drink fine red wine
Upon my head
   I’d wear a fez
And dream the words a poet says.

As it is I wake at night
Soaked in sweat from a fright
Far be dreams
   to bring delight
Instead I lay till dawns gray light.

You see, within my dreams I dream of you
An ancestor whose dreams frighten too
Far away dreams
   in his dark night
Bring views of future within his sight.

Science now does claim to say
What we dream comes our way
Not from present
  but from the past
Through cells encoded, all, to everlast.

Genetics has the sway to hold
All our genes for their quick gold
Will they leave
   my birthright there
Or leave code only they think fair?

I could have been another time
I could have drank fine red wine
Upon my head
   did wear a fez
And dreamed the words a poet says.
