Parked at a table in
Molina's. July Sunday
afternoon. Hot like hell's
hinges outside. Waiting
for enchiladas to arrive.
Through the window, flicker
of motion catches my eye. A
little green Carolina Anole
lizard races across the sand
and gravel of Molina's
courtyard, scurries to
the top of a basketball-
sized rock, begins doing
push-ups. Up, down, up, down,
up, down. As fast as he can.
He pauses, inflates his bright
red dewlap, moves his head
left and right, goes back
to doing push-ups. Little
guy's performing
his mating dance, trying
to impress any lady Carolina
Anoles who might be watching.
Maybe I'll be an Anole in my
next life. Will have to give
up enchiladas but I'll have
a better idea of how
romantic relationships work.

I enjoy your prosaic descriptions

vivid work, great word plays here, and the final line brings it together on a central thought. 5ed
