Face Fuck Book  #46—Roxanne

Roxanne
How you loved to hear me sing
That old tune, sung by Sting
How I teased you
Bought you a red light for the window
You laughed so
Asked me to pay before I'd go
Insisted I put the light in the window
Saying there were
"others waiting for me, you know?"
When I had to leave for foreign lands
Although I wrote daily
       I'll never understand
How you never got the letters I sent
Epistles of love and desire's vent
How you'd set my heart
       on fire too
You refused to see me
       when I returned to you
Imagining I had been untrue
I suspect your mother was the thief
Who stole my letters and caused us grief
In only three months
       you were engaged
The thought of it makes me enraged
Married by winter
to the son of her best friend
That was how our romance would end
After six month you separated
The marriage was ended
       you debated
We talked
       we met
              we even skated
And in between
       we fornicated
Like shell shocked zombies
       on a walkabout
We never slept
       we'd talk and shout
You couldn't decide what road to take
All you would say,
       "It was a  mistake"
I see you every now and then
When they talk of justice on CNN
You stand there in your Judge's robe
       and talk and of cases
       such as "Leopold/ Loeb"
Explaining in the interview
       how laws are made
             and broken too
I watch you with such admiration
This poem is really a small citation
Of how timing in life is everything
Sometimes we reach
       for the golden ring
Somehow we lean
       and miss that thing
Our grasp is empty
Our hearts grow numb
Life goes on and calls us "dumb"
       Decisions
that's what you've built your life upon
       Decisions
             didn't matter
                   once you were gone
