alone you put me on your altar
        so high
like that statue of Buddha
that you carefully dust everyday
that you prostrate to everyday
that you lovingly pray to everyday

with others around you put me on your altar
        even higher
just so you have a viewing audience
when you knock me off
with your words of malcontent

after you knock me off of your altar
     from high above
i am not at all surprised
when you become so far removed from my presence
that you don't even pad the ground with emotional rebound
so that after i fall that long fall
you so enjoy watching with your friends
that i walk away with only a bruised ego
minus a contused heart
