A wizard's dream come true, to fly away
And leave all drought behind on mighty wings
Of his own making, soaring high above

The dense, green maze, the dappled, deep blue sea,
Captivity and boredom; far beyond
The plodding peasants' dreams, to realise

A hope forlorn, and pit his strength against
Brute force and narrowness and to regain
His former summer's brilliance – just to lose

His offspring in the bargain. But then, would
Just staying put have made for gladness? Now
At least he lived through one short hour of joy,

Not just his father's son, no never-was,
But Icarus who when his pinions furled
Crashed down into the annals of the world.
