They had a small home, a cabin,
With barely enough room for the
Three of them and an old wood-
Burning stove.
Nigh a winter day or night passed
When that stove wasn't racing
To keep up with the icy winds
Outside, breaking down wood to
Ash, like burning the density
Clean from bone.

They sent him out to fetch wood,
Even on the coldest nights.
It was a short trip, they were sure,
Easily braved by a small child,
Though on those short trips outside
He had time to look at the night sky,

And place himself between the stars,
And realize what distance meant,

On those cold nights
When they sent him to the back
Of the cabin to fetch wood for
The fire.
