Mama and her daughter,
Having a big fight,
Daughter wants to run,
Disappear into the night,
Says Mama just forget about me,
Things aren't the way they used to be,
And I'm so unhappy,
Not the girl I used to be,
So Mama, just forget about me.

Erect a tombstone in my honor,
Pretend I'm dead and gone,
Gonna go and wait for death to come,
Oh how life can seem so long.

Mama lets her daughter go,
Ten years pass without a word,
Mama cries every night and day,
She can't forget, it's too absurd.

One day out of the blue,
Letter comes in the mail,
Postmarked from New York,
Says Mama I still love you,
I hope you haven't forgotten about me,
I need you to come and take me home,
I'm hurt and lost and really scared,
I'm in the world and I'm all alone,
You were right and I was wrong,
I miss you and I need you,
Oh how life can seem so long.

Mama flies a thousand miles,
Cries the whole way in relief,
Searches roads and seedy buildings,
Still a slave to worried grief.

Finally told, your baby's dead,
Her boyfriend killed her two years ago,
She's buried somewhere far away,
The tombstone marker says Jane Doe.

The letter sent was six years old,
Left inside some old blue jeans,
Finally found by some kind girl,
Who mailed it from her home in Queens.

Cops say your baby had a baby,
And she's living in foster care,
Your daughter had her three years ago,
Hooked on drugs and left her there.

Mama flies another thousand miles,
Cries the whole way in crushed despair,
Takes the baby in her arms,
And sees her daughter's smile there.

Mama says, I'll never forget you,
I'll never let you stray into the night,
Hold's the baby close to her,
And she cries with all her might.
