Tears fall upon this forgetful ground
Caring less for the consequences
Could have been pleasure, possibly pain
Washing clean like torrential rain
Seen from the right eyes, it was beauty
Optimism taints the vision red
From every smile there follows a frown
Or is it the other way round
Look in those passer-bys' eyes
A glint or dead man walking
See everyday people scurrying around
Footfalls on this forgetful ground

Meaningless lives soon swallowed up
Obituaries left for few to weep over
Is this the life we would have chosen?
Did we know what was round the corner?
Laughter teases of more to come
But seldom fulfils that happy promise
Can I ever grin along with the idiots?
Constant front like the seaside prom
Is it a maniac's eye staring back at me?
When the key locks and loneliness knocks?
Is the grin still fixed to the unwatched face?
Or slips to open the demons back in?

Are we toiling for the material girl's social network?
For every piece of silver earned a cloud looses its lining
That grindstone weighs heavier than ever
So sit and rest your weary and tortured mind
Take this to be a much welcome sign
To feel that what's inside of you is right
Stop battling, modern life is rubbish
Promises of excess wealth leave a heart of stone
Look at this beautiful world with new eyes
Laugh and look around, it will surprise
Step outside the machines' walls
Don't look back, you'll be appalled

No more shadowed pathways to walk
Or shackles keeping the run rate down
It's time to unfurl life's mighty wings
To experience what life has in store
Outside those factory gates a place that waits
All things bright and beautiful
Await your gaze and heed your call
Go now and sample succulent fruits
Tread softly upon delicate grass
Make memories to take way with you
To make your life eternal
To thwart this forgetful ground
