FRIENDS

Friends that come and go
bring such sweet sadness
to a world we use to know.
They give us so much,
yet leave us with not enough-
to love, to feel, to touch.

When finally our days are drawn
into one, we admit it's over,
what's done is done.
For our lives seen so full until at
it's end when we look back and find
that nowhere is where we've been.

So, in fevered memory we cling
to the past and a friend who is
only a shadow at last.
But a shadow from the splendid
days of before to live on forever
and forevermore.
