Mother said the vicar wore brown shoes,
I didn't notice when we sang 'Abide with me'
but she did and took it as a sign of disrespect.
Perhaps he didn't have black ones to choose
or maybe they were holed, but we did agree
that black is better and he should have checked.

On reflection and a fact surely no-one disputes,
they could have been worse to a greater degree
if shoes not only were coloured brown, I suspect
voices would have been raised for squeaky boots.
