I put another log on the fire
on this midwinter day.
I know what it is to be defeated,
to be compelled to submit.
I know what it is to quit.
The good hardwood burns long and hot.
Smoke stings my eyes -
the chimney doesn't draw quite right.
Outside, a lone raven,
perched on the phone line,
caws, as if arguing with the sky.
Where are you this evening dark wanderer?
Where are you? Where?

Gorgeous

though I felt the last two lines weren't quite right.

Really good.

Loved the wintery imagery and I am very fond of poems with ravens or crows (in Aussie we call a species of raven, crows) in them. They are so loaded with meaning. I could smell the wood smoke and hear the crackling and popping.

I think though the passage below could be condensed into one line; you seem to be repeating yourself a little.

I know what it is to be defeated,

to be compelled to submit.

I know what it is to quit.

A slice of life kinda poem

that ends on a quirky and kinda dark note. Well worth a five to me.

Damn, this is really good! I would suggest that you leave out "good" in describing the hardwood as that is a personal assessment, a value judgment, but I can't find a thing I would change otherwise. Excellent work:)
