Her Void

Look carefully ...

Only by looking carefully
Will you see.

For she is mostly smiling,
As she steps onto the field,
Right on cue!
See how she pitches
Line and length
With some swerve
Just for added interest.

The fielding is sharp,
pure instinct
Learned early.
No need to applaud.
She can catch the words
the feelings,
With hands tied around her back.
As the saying goes.

There! Did you catch it?
A glimpse of something?
A falter, something wavered
Surely.
A vacant moment,
Eyes momentarily skyward.
Beseeching.

Look right into the iris.
There! The child?
The one sitting under the desk.
making no sound at all.
Voiceless
despite the mouth shaping
And the eyes widened.

Did you see that?
No?

Brittle gloss around her void.

Sparkling.

Your voice here is bell-like. I love "brittle gloss around her void."

Disturbing

Whilst this poem seems deeply personal and quite different to your other poems there is a strong 'voice' here. And the voice seems to challenge the reader to see the more than just the outward bravado, the 'adult' persona of the woman described. The phrase 'brittle gloss' strikes an almost sinister note. Disturbing and powerful.
