I Had Wings Once

Once upon a beautiful time
When all was right in the world
Upon my backs were wings
Silvery, light, perfectly unfurled

They lifted me towards the heavens
Raised me up to new heights
Carried me through struggles
Straight towards the light

They were my freedom to fly
But they held me down at times
Their weight could be unbearable
From under them I couldn't climb

The days stretched on forever
The nights held no rest
In a last attempt to soar again
I gave up what I loved best

I left my love behind
Taking aim for the skies
I flew with the wind
Soaring without ties

But my flight was lonely
The sky began to grey
Life lost it's luster
And I lost my way

With no sense of direction
And a broken heart
I crashed upon the horizon
As I fell apart

On the lookout for my love
I searched high and low
I tore my wings from my body
Bloody and bruised, nothing to show

Now alone I lay upon the ground
No joy for me to sing
Gazing longingly at the stars
Thinking about when I had wings
