I remember the deal I made with me
When the marriage was over, a new beginning you see
I remember the devious deal, I certainly do
But how did I know it would be so difficult to remain true
I know I wanted to be free from the pain
Of living with a man who barely knew my name
A man who did not care, share or produce
The love, I had witnessed in many others, who bore the fruit
So when I knew it was time to be set free from him
I agreed to never ever love anyone again
I thought it was a deal that I should not make
But the pain, the sorrow just compounded my mistake
I asked me to please just let me be free
And never again would I desire anyone’s company
Just take care that man and to his heart let someone in
I asked one more thing before the journey would begin
A promise for my children who had no say in this
I want them to know true love, hold it, share it, feel it too
My children and my children’s children should live happy, fruitful lives
That is the only condition I ask
Then I will let me be
I will continue this journey through life alone
Because in the end I will be free

Suggestion

I'd try taking out the rhyme and letting the words flow more like natural language.

Sad

It was a little sad but I felt your pain. Any poem that makes me feel the writer, in meter or not, out of rhyme or not, is good enough for me.

Looks like you started rhyming then gave up on it — a small element that is glaringly obvious. Though the subject matter and direction of thought are sure to resonate well with anyone who's been there.
