i’m worried i’m the butt
of some universal joke. the kind
where everyone is in on it but me. i
keep checking my shoes
for toilet paper.

i worry about being an unsuspecting anti-christ
or, conversely,
the messiah in disguise. usually these
thoughts occur on different days.

i worry about global warming and curse
myself for celebrating the balmy winter days
and also for not liking the taste of hot cider,
thought the smell is delicious.

i worry about dying
and not having learned how to play
the guitar and sing american
pie at the same time. all the verses,
without looking.

i worry about mad cow disease,
the avian flu, and about the validity of tofu.
i worry about tv dinners and pesticides
and highway accidents
that can happen on the way to
u-pick-berries. fish bones
that can travel the bloodstream
and pierce the heart
are especially disturbing. food,
in general, is worrisome
so I don’t eat
anything
much
except egg rolls from the Wok Inn
and take out.

(i should add, i worry about us, about
how you may be the anti-christ,
the messiah, or someone playing me
for the fool, but i won’t,
because this poem
is about me.)

If this is self absorption

..it's not selfish writing. Highly enjoyable.

Wonderful

While I agree with TRM about the fresh imagery I can find little poetic device, here. It is clever and rewarding, and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite that lack.

Thanks, CC

Solid.

There is so much that is fresh and wonderful here.

I do think the structure could be improved, but that is minor -- the images and thoughts and mood are terrific.

edits - line 13 thought=though.

I suggest you capitalize the first person pronouns. "i" always seems affected to me. And besides, the poem is about "you", as you say, so "I" is a word of prominence here. the only time "i" feels right to me is to signify a loss or unimpotance of self.

oh, he's probably just a guy, you know (and you a girl). you think too much, and worry too much, but it makes for some damn good poetry -- so, selfishly, I ( or "i" ) hope you keep on fretting.

No vote left . . . turn it off turn it off turn it off (just practicing my mantra)
