There's pain beneath our skin. However smooth
and silently alluring, its cool feel
will spell desires that I can't transcend,
half-focused pictures of a love that's failed -

they fade in wreaths of smoke before the cold
of morning finds me staring at my hands
that touched where I could not, and envy's hurt
lies at their tips as bitterness prevails.
