a sonnet
Almost a waning shape, just fragile haunting light,
Nocturnal Diana bestows her pallid glow;
And as her route completes, the ocean down below
Reflects her moonlit figure, drowned in quivering fright...
The subtle filtered murmurs hasten through the night,
The bawling frogs within the sleeping lake lay low,
The hooting owls upon men dismal fears bestow,
Between encroaching bushes quietly kept from sight...
Morfeo's vapour spreads, and languor takes its toll,
As strange sweet despondency quickly claims its place
In lighter hearts of those few blessed with loveless soul...
But (oh, gloomy me!) if I seek sleep's soothe embrace,
My soul is overwhelmed by love and lust's control
And sweetest Kate throughout my dreams so gives me chase
