It's not what you thinkbyDesejo©
This morning, I was surprised
by two dress shirts in my closet.
Convenience, not commitment
Still, they are perfect--
White cotton with a fine stripe
french cuffs unfolded, ironed, starched
seams to stretch over shoulders, a warm torso
yoke to snap across a broad back
hems perfectly aligned
to tuck into
which slacks, what kind of belt
I remember the awful fascination
of cleaning out a different closet
100 Brooks Brothers oxford cloth shirts,
size 16 1/2
some with frayed collars, others never worn.
We took them off the hangers
And stuffed them into black Ziploc bags
So we could all begin to forget
T-shirts are different.
Women can wear those easily
And with time, they become ours.
But men's dress shirts?
We just do not fill them out
in the same way.
Touching them, I realize
it has been much too long
since I shared a closet.
