A Leprechaun’s Charm

I hear the sound
A distant melody
Soft as the snow
That falls in my dreams
Outside my widow pane

I pick up the beat
But my steps are wrong
When I’m ready to dance
It’s not my song
That gentle sweet long lost refrain

I turn in my sleep
And the music is gone
I sigh in my slumber
And am lulled by the long
Low moan of an old freight train

I almost catch it
Between sleep and arousal
Between two heartbeats
When everything’s possible
The moment ‘tween crazy and sane

The times I can fly
Like a kite or a dove
Into the clouds and the heavens above
Or the eye of a hurricane

I drift through a garden
Of unearthly blooms
And it smells like an angel
Flew into my room
And settled into my arms

But then he’s gone
Slipped away like a shade
A bright silver promise
One never made
Sweet like a leprechaun’s charm

A tear on a pillow
Not quite a memory
There’s feeling of loss
It’s all that was left me
A sweet dream which meant me no harm
