I hear your quiet whispers from the bedroom
Two of you take up all the space?.
Gentle murmurs mixed with Sadie barking next door
The windchimes from (our wedding) Cousin Jake on the porch tanging
The people in the white house
Across the street
Coming and going again in their toy car
Engine revs and drives down the road, it dims
A high pitched Radio Shack remote control way
The fridge drones on reminding me how badly the back needs cleaned
Of dust dirt cathair gunk
It works too hard
Mango jumps in my lap and meyelps, settles in
Starts a low rumble purr pleasant and pampered
The fishtank gurgles and the ceiling fan is humming
Pete-n-Paulette's outdoor unit kicks on, I figure they let Sadie back in
Cissy chunks her weight to the growing pile, second purring growl
Half on my arm, half my page, not to be denied just because she was second
Night quiet as night gets
As the 2 am train six blocks over whistles
And the track murmurs have replaced yours
I expect a protracted snore soon.
I look again at the clock
Seconds twitching by on the wall
(it was a wedding gift?.)
And I can't hear it at all.
