Love Begotten

Hollow halls and silence haunt
a castle from whence a prince did flaunt
his power which had grown so great
that none could conquer once berate
and yet his world came crashing down
not by sword or lack of crown
but just by one innocent lass
whom he loved dearly but alas
would not love him for his wealth.
Fair of face but mind of poor health
could only rely on his power
gazing down from his tower
and yet the lass was not affected
not by monuments erected
in her name or battles won
her heart by power not undone
and so the prince from within
destroyed his mind and his kin
his peoples went on their own ways
alone was he for the rest of his days
and now his castle cold and stone
remains like his heart, so alone
all because he could not begin
to fathom love comes from within
a lesson, from whence this castle stands
for all those with wealth and lands
that true love is tempted not
by what others have begot!
