They are like nighttime gables, shuttered tight,
That keep stray eyes from what may pass inside,
The faces that you meet. Across the door

A light illuminates the front, a rose
Against the wall insinuates one might
Find a warm welcome there, but may well hide

Frigidity within, lives gone awry
Or utter lovelessness the outside world
Would but intrude upon. Likewise, a smile

Won't guarantee the wearer feels inclined
To meet you halfway with an open mind
And lifted visor; a come-hither eye

May spellnoli me tangere. I'll keep
My distance, never fear. Much rather than
Be thrown back out, I'll turn my head and pass.
