When I was young I had to try,
To break away, I had to try,
To leave the nest, or know I'd die...........................I'd go.

And then I saw my true love's eyes,
Like burning coals, my true love's eyes,
And then I heard my mother's cries.....................Don't go.

And as I watched the world go by,
I looked and saw our fathers die,
And I could hear the children cry........................Don't go.

But then my love turned cold as ice,
As white as snow, as cold as ice,
She slipped from me that wintry night......She's gone.

And when I saw my true love die,
Grow pale, then blue, and then she died,
O I could hear the mountains cry.....................She's gone.

But I'd have died a thousand times,
For you, my love, a thousand times,
To give you life, I'd give you mine........................I'd go.

Yet still today the mountains sigh,
The oceans roar, the willows cry,
And in my heart I know that I.......................................am gone.
