Did we, perchance, dance,
spin once to the odd rhythm,
step toe and toe together
to a music that never played?

Wasn’t it once we stumbled
mumbled polite apologies
amid clichés of two left feet
too clumsy to even try?

Perhaps we just conversed
those rehearsed phrases we drop
when stopped, searching a response
we find was better unsaid.

Ah, you must remember the glance
a chance we once took – a look
that hinted at something more
than a simple turn of the head?

No. Instead I’ll just recall
of all the faces in the park
a pretty one with a smile
meant for someone else, not me.
