Midnight Epiphanies

byKrenna Smart©

I lie in bed dredging the sludge
And wreckage of my life
Questions, promises, plans made
By the light of the moon
Are gone with the morning dew
Alas the midnight epiphanies
Are naught but cobwebs
Scattered ashes
Will of the wisps at dawn
Which I blow away like feathers

I go about my business with a clear head
Unfettered by fears met in the gloaming
Free I am to repeat mistakes
Over and over and over
Each rock bigger
Each hill higher
Walking the twisted path by day
Which I rue as I slip into sleep
Each night to dream more dreams
Of lost opportunities
Chances not taken
Lovers rebuked
While I grasped at false promises
And childhood fantasies
Waiting for my shining knight
To explode into my life and
Validate my resistance to
Settling for a mundane, everyday existence
Devoid of magic
Each day when I wake
I cast off fragments of nighttime enchantment
And steel myself for another day
Of mindless ennui
And unanswered questions
Whose answers live inside my soul
