as i turn into the heat of the day
into this hot and passionless swell
i ride these waves to you missouri

i am burning up the midwestern plains
these waves that blaze scorched wheat
that lead me to the beat of your heart

i miss you and the days are so long
alone in this lonesome afternoon that
is melting into yet one more tomorrow

where did we go wrong missouri
whatever happened to the song
the cool breezes once whispered

i remember another kind of heat
that ran dripping down your thighs
but now only the residue of sighs

now i am hypnotized by the heat
and lost in an anonymous drought
that leaves you dancing like a mirage.

Enjoyable...

...read by a poet who is ALWAYS worth reading. This is not among his stronger works in my opinion, but steve's work is consistently powerful and this poem has much to say.
