Mountain Top

bycavu182©

Once I was a poet
on some mountain top
high above the clouds
with views that never stop,
Bright sun in the morning
thunder afternoon
all the stars in heaven
you said you'd visit soon,

Up the rocky trail
fifteen miles or more
up the shaky stairs
knock on my door,
You look into my eyes
my 360 view
you ask me what I'm doing
if I'm glad to see you,

I scan you like a laser
your head to your toes
we were lovers in the city
god only knows,
You're wearing just a tee-shirt
shorts that barely fit
dirty running shoes
a pack with your kit,

I say that you look lovely
which, indeed, you do
ask if you'd like coffee
and I make two,
I sweeten it with honey
the way you like it done
we talk about the weather
and watch the setting sun,

Stars appear slowly
each with a name
I wonder what we're playing
the nature of the game,
You ask me if I'm lonely
if I'm coming back to town
I tell you this winter
I might ski down,

You tell me that you're living
in a room above the bar
noise, friends and laughter
not very far,
You work there in the evening
pouring beer and telling jokes
amusing the drunk cowboys
each angling for a poke,

You tell me that you're writing
a sci-fi MacGyver
where I am the protagonist
a lonely star-ship driver,
And you are Princess leia
with a touch of Isadora
the balance of desires
the fauna and the flora,

I offer you my jacket
and you open up your pack
a joint from Colorado
I half smile and you smile back,
Just like old times, you say
you light it and breath deep
that once familiar feeling
as we sow what we reap,

Now we used to get stoned
and make love on the floor
we both thought it creative
and both came back for more,
But that was twenty years ago
or perhaps twenty five
we thought life was forever
we'd always be alive,

Early the next morning
with our coffee cups in hand
you ask if I think
I will ever land,
Or fly on forever
like your science-fiction dude
then you smile again
ask if I'm in the mood,

So we make love once again
and I wonder if you count
me a friend or lover
or a blue-light discount,
You tell me you must hustle
you're due at work at four
I hike with you to tree-line
then a mile or two more ...
