The rattle at my window,
The tapping on my door,
‘Tis my muse a-wandering,
To light my pen aflame,

“Hi ho,” my maid of offering!
“Good eve,” winged lady!
Come with thoughts and phrases,
To set my words to flight,

Speak my red-lipped mistress!
In a voice so soft and clear,
Lean close and give your wisdom,
Whispered gently in my ear,

Speak, my blue-eyed maiden,
Of ideas vast and far,
And then with astounding speed,
My pen flies ‘cross the page,

Tell, all your tales to me,
Tell, and I will write,
Muse please whisper in my ear,
As I dream this night.
