The day has been long and I'm half dead
I think its time for my body to hit the bed

With my pillows fluffed and in sight
All I need to do is get up and turn off the light

I'm too damned tired with my head hanging low
Yep too damned tired that I feel so slow

One more step and my rest will be near
Oh good Lord is that my husband I hear?

Snoring like crazy, how will I get to sleep
Can't do any counting 'coz he scared off all the sheep

I sit myself down on the side of the bed
I look over my shoulder with a shake of my head

Lifting the covers up to place my feet there
Oh what the hell!? This is not quite fair.

A warm furred lump is laying curled into a ball
"Move you little brat" I quietly call

"Yes you" I poke and prod and try to move
But this is a battle that seems I am gonna lose

I try to lay my head down and I squeek I did hear
It came out from under my pillow, oh my, oh dear.

I reached a hand into the darknes and what did I find
But another little warm furred lump "Hey this is not yours, its mine."

I sighed and moved this second brat that I love
She sighed as well as I gave her a soft shove

"I just want to go to sleep, I need the rest"
Its my own fault that I didnt go to bed first, This I do confess.

Finally I was able to stretch my tired body out
When my third little love looked up from her basket with a pout

"No you stay there for tonight please
I am tired and in need of rest so stay there and sleep."

Nope, nadda, nein, I was denied this simple request
For here she comes up to lay at the back of my neck

Now I lay here looking like a broken doll
With my husband still sawing them logs.

I thought a king sized bed would be the right size
For me and him, Selky, Nephy and Isis, I did try.

But good grief, Lord, what shall I ever do
I can't kill'em, I would miss them and my love is too true

So I will just lay here, surrounded by all the love
"Bless them with sweet dreams oh Lord and watch us from above."

I can totally relate.

Only it's snoring husband, burrowing cat, and sideways five year old at my house. He shows up every, single night. Never at the same time. Never for the same reason. I use my nightstand as a pillow. (And if it's thundering, it's even more crowded.)

I love the poem. It's sweet and light and a fun read. I don't usually get poetry, but this could have been written about my king sized bed.

Taps fingers on arm of chair

ha ha hardy ha ha.

Thanks for sharing that I snore (when I sleep on my back) with the site. Little miss I never snore. Yea right.

They are dogs. Three chihuahua mixes, they run from about twelve pound to nearly twenty. The Jack Russel terror mix is in there asleep under my pillow right now.

I truly think they believe it's their bed and they are just allowing us to sleep there.

Love you,

your pirate

The impression given is the pets are cats, but I think they're probably dogs.

obviously a pet lover, assume cats?

Nice work but in need of editing a bit, shortening, many nice details, slang appropriate for local color but not needed here , I would suggest you consider:

"like a broken doll" might be edited to "I lay here looking/waiting for a break in the fog"

"I can't kill'em" is too jarring, just leave it out

"so stay there and sleep" you might cut and sub "in need of sleep and a moment of ease"

keep at it, nice sentiments without being trite
