Swirling green depths swiftly pass me
Powering up the slide, arms locked out in front
Trying desperately to hear the shouted instructions from the stern
Breathing raggedly I twist and lift my hands
Setting fire to my blisters anew
As the blade squares and neatly drops into the water
Time on the catch, now!

As one our feet hit the stretcher plates and push
Again and again in an endless repetition
My view has narrowed to the person in front
Almost mindlessly I copy them

Final minute comes the call
Numbly we drive onwards
Straining for just a little more power, a little more drive
So close now surely we can do it?
Then thankfully we are past the line
“Next stroke – easy all” shouts the Cox
We all stop balancing effortlessly
As the boat glides smoothly onwards
“Hold her up” and as one we dig our blades in and halt the boat

“Not bad for a novice crew training exercise
Now on the way back down the river
Try and concentrate on your finishes!”
The whole team groans
“Do we have to?”

Nicely written

Good peom, although I do have to correct you on one count. The "Swirling green depths" gives you the impression of a beautiful tropical lagoon. Oh no no no. Not even in Scotland. "Murky brown shallows" is closer to the truth, do you not think? You will when you fall in and one of the pike eat you anyway:P

Made me feel like I was in Belize

I've never understood the passion for rowing, but, as always when I read your poetry, I am right there with you, striving for every yard, searching for that extra bit of perfection, just because you know you can find it.

Thanks for the moment in your shoes.
