Never-ending Cocktail

It fades with distance through a vanished point
The long straight concrete highway interstate
That disappears not far beyond the hill,
In trees or after the last barstool there.

You’ll only get there if you sip it slow
Foreshortened white lines surely will blur for you,
Elongate with each taste a burn of tire
On asphalt coating the back of your throat

As heading west is brutal sunset glares –
And failing neon, terminable buzz
Enough to blind like wood grain, maybe worse
All thankful everyone sped past those days.

Last call won’t end it, instead slither up
The coast on North Pacific Route Oh-One
A bottle for the empty parking lot
Sun fizzling away last of the ice cubes.

The morning brings flashing lights, barricades
A point that vanishes with red sunrise
Now spills on gravel, soaking into dirt
The bumper hung over the end of the road.
