Lying in the darkness
The hoofbeats of the black horse
Carry lightly on the wind
Faint echoes on my hearing
As she gallops across
The inky sky.

With blazing eyes
And thick mane flying
She seeks the one who
Has this night been summoned
To mount the beast and take
Their final ride.

My heartbeat matches
The rhythm of those hooves
As I wonder if indeed
This is the time
She comes
For me

My breathing is shallow,
Straining to catch any
Change in the stride
To sense her turning
Nostrils flaring
In her ghostly quest.

Indeed she slows now,
Unlike my heart
Which is leaping
Against my ribs
Fighting like an animal
Trapped in cage of bone.

Dare I open my eyes
To see her standing
Flanks heaving
Foam dripping
Impatiently awaiting
My acceptance.

In the deafening silence
I feel the chill of
Graveyard winds trapped
Within her coat and know
That indeed this is
My nightmare.
