For the sake of a touch
I call from my cell
My lifeline
Leave messages
No reply
But automated voices
Call
Warning that warranties
On things I don't own
Are expiring
And that my identity is being stolen
Stolen! Take it if you can find it
It was lost long ago
No one sees me
Or listens to my voice
I sing late at night
No complaints
I shout in my sleep
No one comforts me
I walk into a dream
Misty and grey
I can't see
Beyond my empty, outstretched arm
My isolation has betrayed me
My former sanctuary
Is a jail cell
I rail and rave and bang at the bars
Of the prison of my mind
Once seduced by the notion of solitude
I now crave life, love, touch
Oh, to be gently touched
Not pushed at on the bus
Jostled in the grocery line
Touched
With warmth and caring
Outside the summer day swelters
My pen is clammy and cold
My jailor
I want to write but can't
Want to run screaming through the streets
End up drunk in a bar
On a stranger's lap
And then to bed
Not alone
But alone
